Captain John "Lucky Jack" Aubrey, played by Russel Crowe, is the captain of HMS Surprise. He spends much of the film between his duty to his mission, his friend Maturin, and to his crew and shows a good sense of strategy throughout.

Doctor Steven Maturin, played by Paul Bettany, is the doctor of the Surprise and a naturalist. Though he is enjoyable in the film and well written, his role as a spy from the books is omitted and would have added more depth.

Midshipman Lord William Blakeney, played by Max Pirkis, is an officer aboard the Surprise. After the first encounter with the Acheron, Maturin has to amputate his arm and over the course of the film, he takes an interest in naturalism.

Midshipman Hollom, played by Lee Ingleby, is an officer with the misfortune of always being on duty whenever the Acheron attacks, having him dubbed a "Jonah". This ill view the crew have of him leads him to commit suicide.
